Time Management #21: The Myth of Multitasking

So many people pride themselves on their multitasking abilities. It’s even one of the top answers given in job interviews when candidates are asked about their strengths.

  • I’m a great multitasker.

  • I can keep many plates spinning at once.

  • I’m good at herding cats, juggling multiple priorities, etc…

I call bullsh*t.

Multitasking, no matter how hard we try at it, is just an illusion. Doing many things at once leads to distraction and error. Maybe you can “walk and chew gum at the same time,” but there’s a higher chance of tripping and stumbling if you do.

Multitasking is just an illusion.jpg

To be at our best, it’s critical to focus on one thing at a time and not let notifications and other “bells” misdirect our attention.

To be singularly focused, we must plan our time and honor the parameters we put in place. For instance, we could frame our day like this:

MORNING:        45 minutes of checking/answering emails + notifications

15 minutes of planning the day

BREAK:               20 minutes

MID-MORNING: 90-minute block of pre-set tasks

PRE-LUNCH:      15 minutes of checking/answering emails + notifications

LUNCH:               45 minutes

EARLY PM:         90-minute block of pre-set tasks

PRE-BREAK:      15 minutes of checking/answering emails + notifications

BREAK:               20 minutes

LATE PM:            120-minute block of pre-set tasks

BREAK:               15 minutes

END OF DAY:     30 minutes of checking/answering emails + notifications

In this scenario, you aren’t looking at Instagram, email, or texts during the “work blocks,” and so you’re much more likely to stay on task and minimize distractions.

The details of your schedule don’t matter, and it will look different for everyone, but setting aside time for focusing on one thing at a time is invaluable.

Try it for one day — I promise you’ll be shocked at the time you regain.

Last week on a mini session, Esther (let's call her, for privacy), was upset because her husband was "making her feel" controlled with his "bad moods," which was affecting her productivity and her own feeling of well-being.

Did you know that it only takes one of you to bring the both of you together into a better relationship than you ever imagined? I teach all the amazing life-changing tools that can empower you, without needing your partner's dedication to your cause.

In 30-minute Esther was able to understand how she had been allowing these "moods" of her husband to make her feel horrible and how she could think differently about his "moods," while taking amazing care of herself and actually bringing them closer. She sent me an email excitedly, telling me how she'd implemented what we discussed and she had felt more positive about her husband and was more productive than she'd been in years. She signed up at that moment for my 12-week coaching package.

It warmed my heart, I've done this work and transformed my relationships. It's hands down the best work I've done in my life and I love teaching other women like you to do the same. Want more love, productivity and less grouchy grumpiness with your mate? Jump on a mini session today. You deserve the best always and why not start now to make 2020 the best year of your life so far! xxx
